SeeAbility Care Home & Resource Centre, Wellington

We were instructed to design a new care home and resource centre for visually impaired adults by SeeAbility (The Royal School for the Blind, based in Epsom, Surrey)
The site chosen for this new facility was a green field in Wellington, Somerset adjacent to an existing housing estate.
The design creates a partially enclosed and therefore private courtyard, facing south wrapping around the entrances to each of the two distinct parts of the building.
The two buildings are linked by their form but are independent of each other, with clerestory natural lighting being the theme for both, providing both natural light and ventilation into the deep plan of the building.
The buildings are completely timber framed with high levels of insulation, resulting in a comfortable but affordable internal environment.
