Studio OK

CHARTERED ARCHITECTS PRACTICE Studio OK is based in Okehampton, Devon. The Firm was established 21 years ago in the Exeter area and has gained a number of awards for high quality design, more recently we were finalists at the LABC Regional Awards, for Best Sustainable Building and Best Community Building for the Stowford Rise Community and Children's Centre, Sidmouth. Both our Architects are members of the RIBA and have conservation training and expertise.

CONVENTIONAL AND UNCONVENTIONAL  There are two strands running through our Practice, one is conventional commissions for anything from a school, a care home, barn conversions, group housing schemes, one off houses, to a small extension. The other is our Self Build Modular Housing System or 'Kit House' which we supply in package form to suit your specific requirements and budget.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY Sustainable and energy conscious principles are at the core of our design thinking and our 3D drawing system enables us to assess energy use and proposed improvements. Nils Westman is qualified as a domestic energy assessor and a green deal assessor, and uses the BRE's rdSAP software.

Barn Conversions

A Dutch Barn or Atcost Shed or other Barn type, converted into a house or houses?

Is it feasible or even possible to do, both in terms of cost and in terms of the planning regulations?

Well the answer is YES, YES and YES!

YES to convert into a house or houses, depending on the size and height, in particular.

YES to convert can be financially viable, depending primarily on, location, access and drainage issues.

YES as far as the new permitted development planning regulations are concerned, which came into force on 6th April 2014, unless there are unusual circumstances which we can discuss with you. These regulations allow the conversion of up to 450 sq m of barn floor area into up to three dwellings. You are also free to apply for full detailed planning permission should you wish if these rules do not apply to your barn.
